Our goal is to educate the consumer on facts about sun exposure, the damage it causes and the statistics on skin cancer. We believe in providing outside resources so our customers can increase their knowledge, draw their own conclusions and make smart decisions about protecting themselves against the sun.
In 2003, at age 35, I was diagnosed with skin cancer. Fortunately, my first two lesions were basal cell carcinoma, the least threatening of the skin cancers. Nevertheless, the diagnosis was an eye opener on many levels. Six years, and fifteen lesions later, I'm still paying attention. These types of "flags" in life are compelling and force us to ask questions about.... How?...... When?....... Where?....... Why? The dermatologist told me the cancer was the result of sun damage experienced in my childhood and the years I spent playing college baseball in the South. I had been diligent in wearing sunscreen during my adult life, but not so much in my younger years. Being fair-skinned, I couldn't argue the opinion or the diagnosis. But it was my brother who posed a broader possibility. "How do you know it's not your sunscreen that causes the cancer? You're rubbing all of those 'chemicals' onto your skin". Being open-minded, I had to stop and think about that. Moreover, I'd been an executive in the chemical industry for 15 years. I had working knowledge of the molecules we've created and manipulated to better our quality of life. I also knew, through those creations, there were molecules that were functional, but little was known about their long term biological and environmental effects, some of which, were certain to be negative. Since my initial diagnosis, there has been plenty of evidence collected that supports the belief that chemical sunscreens cause cellular damage. Studies continue, but what's certain is that sun damage is cumulative in it's impact on the skin and the products we use to protect ourselves need to be better understood. It was time to facilitate change. In 2009, SolarAegis was born to plot a new course. Mineral-based sunscreens with natural ingredients would be the direction. More importantly, however, I didn't want to simply create a product, I wanted to create awareness......to educate the consumer on facts about sun exposure and the damage it causes.....the statistics on skin cancer....... to offer full disclosure on the ingredients we use and why we use them......and provide outside resources so our customers can increase their knowledge, draw their own conclusions and make smart decisions about protecting themselves. SolarAegis is more than a sunblock. It is a journey. The company, products and customers will evolve, collectively, as we learn, improve and take steps to achieve a higher level of awareness.
